ABOUT GRAND MARAIS:
This small, quaint town of 1,300 people grows significantly in the summer & winter with tourists and other international students. You will make many new friends here.
Away from big city chaos and congestion, you will not find movie theaters, shopping malls or discos here... though video rentals are available and our new Arts Center brings year-round theater, dance, art and music performances. Our public library is a favorite and also offers internet access.
Visitors come here for the beauty of our forests, lakes and waterfalls. They enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, biking, tennis, soccer, golf, animal watching or just relaxing. In the winter our guests and staff enjoy fun things to do in the snow... like snowshoeing, cross country skiing, downhill (alpine) skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice skating, winter photography or walking a quiet winter road.
IMPORTANT: Applicants who like outdoor activities; enjoy nature, can explore on their own; and do not need the social activities, pubs and parties of a busy city will be happiest here!
TRANSPORTATION:
See the "Travel Planner" pages on this web site to help plan your journey to Grand Marais.
ONCE YOU ARRIVE: Town is small and easy to get from place to place. You can walk or bike most places, or to explore the area on your time off. We offer discounted mountain bike rental. Since town is small, public transportation, taxi service and car rental is very limited, though students ride to Duluth with staff on occasion for a day's shopping. We also assist interested staff in finding a used car to cost-share with others while you are here. Some students get their Minnesota and International Driver's License while they are in Grand Marais.
